Day 3 - Cultural Center

The Cultural Center was the original public library. It was built around Civil War times. The interior is simply beautiful. J and I cabbed there while K and S "hung". Another phone call is possible but this time from the cow. 



The Tiffany Dome was above the original check out station. Walls throughout are engraved with educational names and quotes. 






Pretty murals decorated the hallway as we walked toward the cupola.


The Healy and Millet stained glass dome is another beauty. Thank goodness this building wasn't demolished (as planned) when a new library was built.



J and D were entranced with this creative model for collective living

Going Home

Our last day will coincide with the Chicago Marathon. And, the start will pass by our hotel!  Can you see runners reflected in the window? Ceiling in hotel lobby Front desk says no taxis will be available for us. We walk back to the taxi area and the very kind fellow walks a block away from Columbus and gets us a cab. Cabbie must back down the one-way street! He takes J, K and S to breakfast and D, who moves more slowly, to the airport.  S makes breakfast for her family! This was a wonderful trip. J and K were able to visit a lot with S, and D was able to work on her "to see" list. J didn't think this was the nicest of the Embassy Suites she'd encountered, but we agreed it was fine for the 3 of us. D realized how single-minded she has become about her itinerary but it worked out as J and K wanted time with S.  Fine trip home. We cabbed to J's church and her DH picked us up.

Day 1 We Leave DC Behind

Cast of travelers: S (Student at Art Institute in Chicago) K (40ish, mother of S) J (70ish, mother of K and grandmother of S) Me! D (70ish neighbor of K) Via email, we nailed down the days we could all travel. We then went to K’s and ordered our tickets on her computer. J has points for Hilton so we were able to get a good price for an Embassy Suites on N. Columbus Dr. We got an inexpensive United Airlines flight. ✄ Travel alert! Be sure to check the small print on this Basic Economy ticket. You can bring aboard ONLY ONE carryon and it MUST fit under the seat in front of you. It costs $25 to check a bag weighing less than 50 pounds. If you are a scofflaw, you have to check your bag at the gate and could get charged another $25. Because she lives closest to Reagan Airport in D.C., we spent the night with J. Her DH drove us to Reagan. Traffic was heavy at 7:40 a.m. but we got to the airport in plenty of time.

Day 4 - Field Musuem

We Lyft to the Field Museum this a.m. Interior view from 2nd floor  D opts for the American Indian area.  Pawnee round house has drawings on hide Artist recreated models Aztec medallion D visits a special China exhibit On to the dinosaurs D breezed through the Egyptian area  Cats were worshiped A mummy! D also enjoyed the jade and jewelry areas: This worker is restoring an artifact We all meet for a nice lunch at the first floor cafe, then break for more exploring. We meet at the huge gift shop. Pooped, we return to the hotel. J and D get a free wine. K joins us and we decide to check on the actual hotel dinner menu. A man in line at the bar suggests a local pizza place that will deliver. I forget what we ordered but it was good and came to the front desk within an hour. We decided a Chicago pizza on our last night made a lot of good sense! J in wine line!
